It Begins!

I’ll be documenting the growth of our current project, Rocket Kitty. Our game features a jet pack cat trying to navigate their way through obstacles in different environments. We’re trying to keep it simple so we can get it finished within a reasonable timeframe.

We’re a two person team with a programmer (Rhino) and an artist (me!). I’m a complete newbie, so Rhino will be walking me through the game design process and workflow.

It’s only been a week since we’ve started, but we’re already having so much fun! Of course, this is before the inevitable disgruntled nights working long hours only to tweak something that will hardly be noticeable in the final product. Or at least that’s what I’ve been told will happen.

Here’s the star of our game:

Typical flying cat vs cat that’s been booped

And here are the initial mockups I did for some of the levels using Autodesk Max:

I wanted to go for a low poly look so I can concentrate on getting it done and not be overwhelmed with trying to crank out textures and UVing everything.

Once I figure out how to make gifs, I’ll post some of Rhino’s progress!

Software: Godot, Perforce Helix Core for version control, and Autodesk Max for 3d modeling and level mockups. There will probably be some Photoshop/Illustrator work for UI and stuff later on. I’m new to both Godot and Perforce, so there might be a learning curve.

Currently working on:

Callisto (Art):

  • Familiarizing myself with Godot and Perforce
  • Getting Forest assets ready to import into the editor
  • Adding collision to assets that need it.
  • Tweaking Forest level lighting, environment, and camera settings

Rhino (Programming):

  • UI and Menu layout
  • Transitions between different screens
  • Saving game data (scores, stars, time)
  • Code for speed boosts
